Apprenticeships

We are thrilled to announce our new Mentor/Apprentice program. The purpose is to create new Native Masters who reside in Chilkoot Aani.  It is an opportunity for practicing artists to make a life-long commitment to mastering an art form and be responsible for carrying on knowledge to the next generation. Chilkoot Tribal members should let us know their interest in being apprentices in the program. Apprentices will be matched to a Mentor in the traditional arts (does not need to be Chilkoot or live in Haines). The pair complete the final application, which is due the end of January. Apprentices will receive $6,000. Masters will receive $10,000. And there is up to $500 for supplies. Each year two pairs will be funded. We ask the pair to write up a plan for how learning will occur and how they will publicize the process and final results. Details of the program will continue to be posted at https://www.chilkoot-nsn.gov/mentor-apprentice-program/ or call Helen Alten, 907-766-2323 x104.
