Environmental Services
The Chilkoot Indian Association’s Environmental Department works in conjunction with the CIA’s other departments and with tribes throughout the region and state to address a variety of environmental issues which affect our Tribal Citizens.
Indian General Assistance Program (IGAP): The EPA’s IGAP program has been funding Tribal Environmental programs nationwide since 1992. This program funds hands-on projects designed to combat environmental threats to our area including
- Working with the Takshanuk Watershed Council on the annual marine debris clean up.
- Working with the Haines Borough to remove and process junk cars.
- Working with the local fishing fleet to retrieve derelict crab pots and return them to their rightful owners.
- Working with Haines Friends of Recycling on their programs including fish net and scrap metal recycling.
- Working with the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida on the Kuti Landslide Project.
SEATOR Consortium: The CIA is a member of the Southeast Alaska Tribal Oceanic Research (SEATOR) Consortium. We are responsible for conducting the field research which enables SEATOR’s lab to provide baseline data for their Ocean Acidification and Paralytic Shellfish Toxin studies. We also work with SEATOR to monitor the encroachment of the European Green Crab.

Air Quality: Through funding provided by an EPA Air Quality Grant, the Environmental Department has worked alongside other agencies and regional Tribes to measures Particulate Matter (PM2.5) air quality data using both indoor and outdoor low-cost air quality sensors.
Tribal Citizens can contact the Environmental Department for a FREE indoor air quality assessment or to borrow sensors to conduct their own at-home tests for Particulate Matter, Carbon Monoxide, Volatile Organic Compounds, Ventilation issues, mold, and Radon.

Low-emission Engine Upgrades for the Tribal Commercial Fishing Fleet: Our department procured funds through the EPA’s Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) Program, which has enabled Tribal Members who fish commercially to apply for Tier 3 Diesel Engine upgrades aimed at improving public health and reducing emissions that cause climate change.
