Haines, Alaska – 9/29/2025 – The Haines Borough in partnership with the Chilkoot Indian Association is excited to announce the launch of its Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Project, a federally supported initiative aimed at improving roadway safety and reducing traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries.
This project will bring together community members, transportation professionals, and local leaders to create a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan tailored to the unique needs of the Haines Borough.
Key steps and public engagement opportunities for the project will include:
- Community Safety Survey – A short survey will gather feedback on local transportation concerns and ideas for improvement.
- Public Meetings – Residents will have multiple opportunities to share input and priorities.
- Steering Committee Formation – A volunteer steering committee will be established to help guide the project and ensure community voices are represented.
- Assembly & Planning Commission Meetings – Residents are encouraged to participate in the public comment sessions at both Assembly and Planning Commission meetings to provide feedback and share opinions regarding the project.
- Comprehensive Safety Action Plan – A final, actionable plan will be developed, reviewed, and approved, outlining the Borough’s top safety priorities and needed improvements. It will guide implementation while also positioning the Borough to secure state and federal funding to bring these projects to fruition.
The Haines Borough encourages all residents to get involved and help shape the future of safer streets for everyone — children, seniors, drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and visitors alike.
Meeting dates, survey links, and steering committee details will be shared soon on the Borough website and social media channels.
